Kochhar Fights for Position at International Series Japan

Kochhar Strives for a Strong Finish

Karandeep Kochhar from India showcased resilience as he battled for a Tied-4th position after the third round of the International Series Japan held at the Caledonian Golf Club on Saturday. Following two rounds without a bogey, Kochhar faced challenges in the third round, recording five bogeys that offset his three birdies, resulting in a score of 2-over 73. His cumulative score now stands at 8-under 205, placing him two strokes behind the leaders, Shugo Imahira from Japan and Korea's Hongatek Kim, both at 10-under 203.

Kochhar's Round Highlights

Kochhar's round began positively with a birdie on the 2nd hole, but he quickly fell back with consecutive bogeys on the 3rd and 4th holes. Although he managed to regain momentum with a birdie on the 6th, he dropped shots again on the 9th and 12th holes. He finished the day with a birdie on the 14th but bogeyed the 17th, concluding with a score of 2-over.

Leaders Navigate Challenging Conditions

Korea's Hongtaek Kim maintained his lead for the third consecutive day amidst fluctuating conditions, with Shugo Imahira joining him at the top. Kim, who began the round with a one-shot advantage, posted a one-over-par 72, keeping him at 10-under, while Imahira recorded a 71. Yubin Jang from Korea trails by one stroke after a 71, with Australian Travis Smyth and Kochhar one stroke further back. Smyth shot a commendable 68 in this season's opening event, part of the Asian Tour's International Series, which serves as a pathway to the LIV Golf League.

Kim's Performance Under Pressure

Despite a windy day that complicated play, Kim managed to hold onto his lead. He faced difficulties on the back nine, making bogeys on holes 10, 12, and 14, while Imahira, Jang, and Smyth all birdied the 18th. Kim expressed that he played well on the front nine but struggled to adapt to the changing conditions on the back nine, which made the game more challenging.

Chasing Titles

At 32 years old, Kim is in pursuit of his second title on the Asian Tour, having previously won the GS Caltex Maekyung Open two years ago. A victory tomorrow would mark his first title in The International Series.

Imahira's Historic Ambitions

Shugo Imahira faced his own challenges during the round, dropping shots on holes 14 and 15 before finishing with a birdie. He aims to become the first Japanese player to win this title, following Australian Lucas Herbert's victory in the inaugural event last year. With ten wins on the Japan Golf Tour, including the Asia Pacific Open Golf Championship Diamond Cup in 2022, he is considered a strong contender.

Prospects for Tomorrow

Yubin Jang, a promising talent from Korea, is also in contention. After turning professional in 2023 and contributing to Korea's gold medal win at the Asian Games, he has already secured two victories on the Korean PGA Tour this year. Despite facing challenges retaining his LIV Golf League playing rights, he appears to have bounced back stronger.

Exciting Conclusion Ahead

The final day at Chiba promises to be thrilling, with only four strokes separating the top 25 players on the leaderboard.
