KKR Triumphs in Super Over Against LSG to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
KKR's Thrilling Victory
On Sunday, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) achieved a nail-biting victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow, keeping their IPL 2026 playoff aspirations intact. KKR's bowler Vaibhav Arora attributed the success to the outstanding performance of Rinku Singh.
Rinku delivered a stellar innings, scoring 83 runs off 51 balls, which included seven boundaries and five sixes, propelling KKR past the 150-run mark after being asked to bat first. In a post-match press conference, Arora remarked, "Rinku's innings was crucial for our win. Without his contribution, we wouldn't have reached 155, which was a competitive total on this pitch. His four sixes in the final over were pivotal in securing our victory."
Super Over Excitement
The match culminated in a Super Over following a dramatic last over from Mohammed Shami, who hit a six on the final ball when seven runs were required, thus forcing the Super Over. Sunil Narine was entrusted with bowling the Super Over for KKR, where he successfully dismissed Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram with his first three deliveries. Rinku Singh then sealed the match with a boundary on the very first ball of the Super Over, clinching the win for KKR, who have won the IPL title three times.
Trust in Narine
When questioned about the decision to have Narine bowl the Super Over, Arora stated, "We all recognized that Sunil Narine is our best bowler. He has been a loyal player for the franchise for many years, and everyone had complete faith in him for this critical moment. As you saw, he managed to dismiss both batsmen while allowing just one run. We felt confident with Narine on the field, especially since he has previously bowled a maiden over in a Super Over. He restricted them effectively, giving us a favorable chance to win."
Pitch Conditions and Bowling Tactics
The match was a low-scoring affair, with both teams facing challenges on a pitch that favored pace bowlers. LSG's Mohsin Khan achieved a remarkable five-wicket haul, limiting KKR to 155 runs for seven wickets.
Discussing the pitch conditions, Arora noted, "The surface was somewhat challenging, but it wasn't impossible to chase down 155 runs. Our bowling unit performed well, placing the ball accurately and conceding only 37 runs during the powerplay while also claiming a wicket. I took a wicket in the second over, which helped us gain early momentum. We managed the powerplay effectively, controlled the middle overs, and our spinners consistently took wickets. I believe we have the finest spinners in the IPL, with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy doing an excellent job. By the end, the required run rate had escalated to 10-12 runs per over, and we executed our plans successfully."
