KKR Signs Saurabh Dubey as Replacement for Injured Akash Deep Ahead of IPL 2026
KKR Welcomes Saurabh Dubey
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to bring in left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey as a substitute for the injured Akash Deep for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, according to reports from a sports news outlet. Venky Mysore, the franchise's CEO, confirmed this decision during a recent intra-squad match in Kolkata.
Saurabh Dubey's Background
Although Dubey is yet to make his IPL debut, he has played three T20 matches without taking a wicket and has not participated in competitive cricket for nearly two and a half years. However, he showcased his talent in the Vidarbha Pro T20 League, where he claimed five wickets in six matches before an injury interrupted his performance. Additionally, he has served as a net bowler for the Mumbai Indians, who have won the championship five times. Dubey gained recognition as the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
Replacement Trials Underway
KKR conducted trials to find a suitable replacement for Akash Deep and also for Harshit Rana, who may miss the entire season due to injury. The trials featured bowlers such as Navdeep Saini, KM Asif, Simarjeet Singh, Akash Madhwal, and Sandeep Warrier. Mysore praised head coach Abhishek Nayar for effectively organizing the trials, allowing coaches to evaluate potential candidates during training and practice matches.
Coaches Impressed by Dubey
Mysore noted that Saurabh Dubey particularly stood out during the trials, stating, 'The coaches were excited and expressed their desire to have him as Akash Deep's replacement.'
Injury Challenges for KKR
Mysore expressed concern for their marquee signing, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who has not yet joined the team due to an injury sustained during the ICC T20 World Cup. KKR's head coach recently mentioned that Pathirana is expected to be available by mid-April. Mysore added, 'We are in constant communication with him and the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. We want to ensure the player's well-being and are not rushing the process.'
Akash Deep's Recovery
In a further blow to the team's pace attack, Akash Deep has been ruled out as he continues to recover from a lower back stress injury. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and has three months left for a full recovery.
KKR's Pace Attack Overview
With Dubey joining the squad, KKR's pace lineup now includes Pathirana, Blessing Muzarabani, Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, and Umran Malik, along with all-rounder Cameron Green as an additional pace option. The absence of Mustafizur Rahman, who was released last year due to BCCI directives concerning the treatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, has left KKR's pace attack significantly weakened ahead of their season opener on March 29.
