KKR Faces Double Injury Setback Before IPL 2026

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are grappling with injury concerns as pacer Matheesha Pathirana is likely to miss the initial matches of the IPL 2026 season. Additionally, the status of Harshit Rana remains uncertain, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Pathirana Expected to Return by Mid-April

KKR's head coach, Abhishek Nayar, has announced that Pathirana, who was acquired for Rs 18 crore during the IPL auction, is anticipated to be available only from mid-April. The Sri Lankan bowler missed the 2026 T20 World Cup due to a calf strain and is currently in rehabilitation under the guidance of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

During a pre-season press conference, Nayar mentioned that Pathirana is undergoing rehab with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board and is expected to regain match fitness around mid-April. "The latest update we have is that he is with the Sri Lankan cricket board for rehab. They believe he will be match fit by mid-April," he stated.

Rana's Injury a Major Setback

KKR is also dealing with the absence of Harshit Rana, a crucial pace bowler in recent seasons, due to a knee injury sustained during India's T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match against South Africa, which caused him to miss the tournament.

Nayar expressed that Rana's absence is a significant blow to the team, highlighting his contributions over the past seasons. He noted that KKR is currently assessing other bowlers in collaboration with the leadership group to find a suitable replacement. "It's a big blow because Harshit has been a vital part of our team, especially during our championship season. We're evaluating several bowlers to see who can step in effectively," Nayar added.

KKR's Upcoming IPL 2026 Matches

KKR is scheduled to begin their IPL 2026 journey against the Mumbai Indians on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Following this, they will compete against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and then face last year's finalists, Punjab Kings, on April 6, also at Eden Gardens. Their fourth match will be against Lucknow Super Giants on April 9 at Eden Gardens.
