KKR Excludes Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 Squad Following BCCI Directive
KKR Confirms Player Exclusion
On Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced the removal of Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 roster, adhering to a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In a media statement, KKR confirmed, "The BCCI/IPL, as the governing body of the IPL, has instructed us to release Mustafizur Rahman from our squad ahead of the upcoming season." The advisory further noted, "This release has been executed following the proper procedures and consultations, as directed by the BCCI. The BCCI will permit KKR to acquire a replacement player in accordance with IPL rules, with more information to follow soon."
BCCI's Directive Explained
This decision follows comments from BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, who indicated that the cricket board had mandated KKR to release Rahman due to ongoing developments. He stated, "In light of recent events, the BCCI has instructed KKR to let go of Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. If they seek a replacement, the BCCI will accommodate that request."
Political Reactions to Player's Selection
The decision to include Rahman had previously ignited political controversy, especially in the context of recent incidents involving Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Concerns were raised regarding KKR's choice to select Mustafizur for the IPL 2026 season, where he was acquired for a substantial sum of Rs 9.20 crore during the auction last December.
BJP Leader Supports BCCI's Decision
Following the BCCI's announcement, BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som expressed his approval of the decision, criticizing KKR's co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. He remarked that the actor has recognized the importance of not opposing the sentiments of the "Sanatanis." Som stated, "We appreciate the BCCI's decision, considering the feelings of 100 crore Sanatanis in India. This reflects the victory of Hindus across the nation."
"Shah Rukh Khan has realized that he should respect the Sanatanis while residing in India, acknowledging that many Sanatanis have contributed to his success," he added.
