KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane Reflects on Defeat Against SRH in IPL 2026
Rahane Analyzes KKR's Loss to SRH
Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), expressed that the team's defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was primarily due to the absence of vital partnerships during the middle overs while attempting to chase a daunting target of 227 runs in the sixth match of IPL 2026 on Wednesday. He remarked, "We needed a couple of significant partnerships. Players who were set should have taken it deeper. Although we bowled well after they seemed poised for a large total, we failed to establish those crucial partnerships while batting."
Powerplay Performance and Pitch Conditions
Rahane highlighted that KKR had a strong start, scoring 84 runs in the first six overs. However, losing an additional wicket and not capitalizing during the middle overs proved detrimental. He also mentioned that the pitch conditions became increasingly challenging during the chase, with slower balls gripping more than anticipated.
Impact of Slower Balls
"The slower balls were gripping more than they did in the first innings. We expected the wicket to improve, but the ball was stopping unexpectedly. Nonetheless, we had a solid start but failed to build on it," he stated.
Praise for SRH Bowlers
Rahane commended the SRH bowlers for their effective execution, particularly their use of variations and angles during the middle overs, which put pressure on KKR's batters. He noted, "The SRH bowlers executed their slower balls and angles exceptionally well. We just needed those small partnerships. If our batters maintain a positive mindset and awareness, we will be fine moving forward."
Nitish Kumar Reddy's Standout Performance
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was named Player of the Match for his impressive 39 runs and two wickets, shared, "I have been waiting for a match-winning performance for a long time. I am trying to stay positive. Last season was tough for me, but I focused on improving my bowling. I worked hard, and it’s paying off. I feel great, thanks to the trainers and physios who have supported me."
Match Summary
In summary, the three-time champions KKR faced a significant defeat by 65 runs, unable to chase the challenging target of 227 runs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored a rapid half-century for KKR, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to convert their starts. For SRH, Jaydev Unadkat took three wickets, while Heinrich Klaasen's half-century and explosive innings from Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head helped set a total of 226/8. Blessing Muzarabani also excelled with four wickets.
