Historic Win for Kimi Antonelli at Monza

Monza [Italy], September 6: Kimi Antonelli delivered an incredible performance at the Italian Grand Prix, racing from 19th position on the starting grid to clinch victory at his home circuit, marking the first Italian win at Monza in 60 years.

The young Mercedes driver showcased his skills on Sunday, overtaking teammate George Russell with only three laps left, finishing 3.8 seconds ahead of him.

This triumph ended a long wait for an Italian winner at Monza, as Antonelli became the first local driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti did so for Ferrari in 1966.

Starting from 19th was a result of a grid penalty, but the 20-year-old took advantage of a strategic approach, a powerful new engine, and impressive overtaking maneuvers to navigate through the pack.

With this victory, Antonelli solidified his lead in the championship, increasing his points advantage over Russell from 59 to 66, bringing his total to 267 points, while Russell remained in second place with 201 points.

Antonelli's remarkable comeback faced a moment of uncertainty when he briefly went off track at the Variante del Rettifilo on Lap 49 while trying to overtake Russell. However, he quickly regained control and executed a decisive pass just three laps before the finish line.

Max Verstappen secured third place, followed by Lando Norris in fourth and Oscar Piastri in fifth, with Lewis Hamilton finishing sixth.

Pierre Gasly took seventh, while Arvid Lindblad, Franco Colapinto, and Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top ten.

It was a tough day for Ferrari at their home race, with Charles Leclerc crashing out on the second lap after losing control at high speed, and Hamilton only managing to finish sixth.

Italy's Prime Minister Georgia Meloni took to X to congratulate Antonelli on his remarkable achievement, stating, “Sixty years later, an Italian returns to winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Congratulations to Kimi Antonelli, extraordinary young talent who signs a historic result.”

With this victory in front of his home crowd, Antonelli not only extended his championship lead but also made his mark in Monza's history, ending one of the longest waits for a home winner in Italian motorsport.
