Kieron Pollard Exits SA20 Tournament Ahead of IPL Coaching Role

West Indies cricket star Kieron Pollard has announced his withdrawal from the 2027 SA20 tournament after being appointed as the head coach for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2027. This decision allows him to avoid competing against MI Cape Town, a franchise under the same ownership. Pollard, who is close to reaching a significant T20 milestone of 15,000 runs, continues to be active in franchise cricket worldwide. The upcoming SA20 season is set to begin on January 17, and Pollard will also participate in the IPL auction as MI's head coach.

Kieron Pollard Withdraws from SA20 Tournament

West Indies cricket icon Kieron Pollard, who was recently acquired by Joburg Super Kings (JSK) during the SA20 auction, has decided to withdraw from the tournament's 2027 season. According to reports, Pollard has communicated his choice to the franchise, allowing them to seek a replacement from outside the auction pool.

Pollard's New Coaching Role

On Saturday, Pollard was appointed as the head coach for Mumbai Indians (MI) for the upcoming IPL 2027 season. Given that MI Cape Town (MI CT) is also under the same ownership, his withdrawal from SA20 will prevent him from competing against a franchise associated with the same group. Pollard played for MI Cape Town in the SA20 during the 2024 and 2025-26 seasons, participating in 12 matches and accumulating 207 runs at an impressive strike rate of 171.07. However, MI Cape Town opted not to bid for him in the recent auction.

Association with the MI Franchise

In addition to his role with MI, Pollard is also the head coach for MI London, another franchise owned by the same group, in the men's Hundred competition. His connection with the MI family extends to MI New York in Major League Cricket, where he played from 2023 to 2026, and MI Emirates in the ILT20, where he participated from 2023 through the 2025-26 season, alongside his time with MI Cape Town. JSK secured Pollard's services for Rand 1.5 million (approximately US$90,272).

Milestones and Future Engagements

At 39 years old, Pollard is on the verge of a remarkable T20 milestone, needing just one more run to become the second batter, following Jos Buttler, to achieve 15,000 runs in this format. He remains active in franchise cricket globally, having recently played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL 2026, which took place in August and September. The 2027 SA20 season is set to commence on January 17, and prior to this, Pollard will participate in the IPL auction as the head coach of MI.
