Kidambi Srikanth, a former world number one, faced disappointment once again as he was unable to secure a BWF World Tour title, losing to Su Li Yang from Chinese Taipei in the men's final of the US Open Badminton tournament on Sunday.
At 33 years old, Srikanth battled against a younger opponent, who is nine years his junior, but ultimately succumbed to a score of 21-15, 16-21, 21-9 after an intense match lasting one hour and nine minutes.
Match Analysis
The match began with Su quickly establishing a 10-5 lead in the first game. Srikanth managed to equalize at 10-10, but Su then surged ahead, winning seven consecutive points to clinch the first game.
In the second game, Srikanth matched Su's pace initially, then shifted gears to go from 15-13 to 20-13, ultimately converting his fourth game point to take the game.
However, the exertion took a toll on Srikanth, and despite staying close at 9-7 in the final game, Su dominated by scoring eight consecutive points to win the match.
A Display of Sportsmanship
During the tournament, Srikanth showcased remarkable sportsmanship in the semifinals. After a controversial call that went against him, he approached the referee and conceded the point back to Japan's Okimoto, despite the protests from his side.
