Khelo India Tribal Games: A New Era for Tribal Athletes in Chhattisgarh
Inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games Set to Begin
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], March 24: The first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) is about to kick off in Chhattisgarh starting Wednesday. Esteemed Indian sports figures, including hockey Olympians Dilip Tirkey and Salima Tete, along with top sprinter Animesh Kujur, have praised the initiative as a significant opportunity for tribal communities to advance their sports careers.
Participants from thirty states and Union Territories will compete in the Khelo India Tribal Games, which will showcase nine different sports. Events will include archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling, with traditional sports like mallakhamb and kabaddi featured as demonstration events. Approximately 3,800 athletes are expected to participate, with the Games concluding on April 3. Competitions will take place across three cities: Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja.
Dilip Tirkey, who serves as the president of Hockey India and is a former Olympian, expressed pride in this inaugural championship, emphasizing its role in providing a platform for young tribal athletes to demonstrate their skills and excel in sports. He noted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a sporting nation by encouraging youth participation in sports.
“It is a matter of immense pride for us that this championship is being launched for the first time in our country. It presents a fantastic opportunity for youth and tribal athletes to showcase their abilities and aspire to represent the nation. Our Prime Minister's vision is to connect all youth with sports,” Tirkey stated in an interview with SAI Media.
Chhattisgarh, along with Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam, will have a significant presence at the Games, with each state contributing over 100 athletes. The gender distribution among participants will be nearly equal, adhering to the Olympic charter's principles of gender neutrality.
A total of 106 gold medals will be contested, with athletics offering the highest number at 34. Other sports like swimming (24), wrestling (18), weightlifting (16), and archery (10) will also feature substantial medal opportunities. Team sports such as hockey and football will be held in Raipur, while athletics will take place in Jagdalpur, and wrestling will be hosted in Sarguja.
Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized the importance of sports in helping athletes, particularly from tribal backgrounds, to build successful careers and improve their lives. He shared his personal journey, coming from a tribal family, and expressed hope that the participating tribal children would have bright futures ahead. Many tribal athletes have previously represented India and become role models within their communities, he noted.
Animesh Kujur, a national record holder in the 100m and 200m sprints, commended the Khelo India Tribal Games for reaching underserved areas and praised the government's efforts to unite young tribal athletes from across the nation.
“There are numerous regions in India where sports have not yet made an impact. This makes the Khelo India Tribal Games particularly significant. I commend the government's initiative to gather young sports enthusiasts from tribal areas at the Chhattisgarh Games,” Kujur remarked to SAI Media.
All athletes participating in the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games have been selected through trials organized by national sports federations. Coaches appointed by the Sports Authority of India will monitor their performances.
“Our tribal athletes should seize this opportunity to showcase their talents, represent the country, and build their careers. The Prime Minister's vision for the 2036 Olympics is for India to emerge as a youthful and sporting nation. I firmly believe that our youth will one day make our country a true sporting powerhouse,” Tirkey added.
Chhattisgarh's Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao also expressed enthusiasm for the Games, stating, “The National Tribal Games are being organized for the first time in India, and Chhattisgarh is honored to host them. More than 3,000 athletes from across the country will participate, and preparations are nearing completion. The event will be inaugurated on March 25 and conclude on April 3. This initiative will greatly benefit tribal athletes nationwide. I extend my gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for their support,” Sao told News Media.
