Chhattisgarh Hosts Khelo India Tribal Games
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], March 22: The Government of Chhattisgarh's Sports and Youth Welfare Department has declared the state as the venue for the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG), a significant addition to India's sports calendar under the Khelo India initiative.
Starting on March 25, the Games will take place in three culturally rich cities: Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Surguja, each representing the vibrant tribal heritage of Chhattisgarh. The KITG 2026 will run from March 25 to April 3, featuring over 2,300 athletes and 3,700 participants.
With more than 32% of its population belonging to tribal communities, Chhattisgarh is not just a host but a natural home for these Games. The region's rich traditions and athletic prowess have long been integral to its culture, as highlighted in the announcement.
The Khelo India Tribal Games aim to honor this legacy, reinforcing Chhattisgarh's vital role in India's tribal identity.
Sports Disciplines and Venues
The Games will feature nine sports disciplines across two categories:
Seven Competitive Sports: The competitions will include a variety of disciplines such as Archery, Athletics, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Mallakhamb, and Kabaddi, held at key venues throughout Chhattisgarh.
Hockey matches are set to occur at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium in Raipur, along with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Football Ground at Pt Ravishankar Shukla University.
Swimming events will be hosted at the International Swimming Pool in Raipur, while Weightlifting competitions will take place at the Open Ground within Pt Ravishankar Shukla University.
Athletics will be conducted at Krida Parisar, Dharampura in Jagdalpur, and Wrestling and Mallakhamb events will be organized at Gandhi Stadium in Surguja.
Kabaddi matches will be held at the Balbir Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium in Raipur, ensuring broad participation across regions.
Additionally, two demonstration sports, Mallakhamb and Kabaddi, will highlight indigenous sporting traditions, showcasing their significance on a national platform.
Introducing 'Morveer': The Games' Mascot
The Games will feature 'Morveer', the official mascot, symbolizing Chhattisgarh's cultural heritage. The name 'Mor' translates to 'mine' or 'our own' in Chhattisgarhi, while 'Veer' signifies bravery. Together, 'Morveer' represents the pride and spirit of India's tribal communities, serving as a symbol for all participating athletes.
For tribal athletes nationwide, this event presents a pivotal opportunity. Many talented individuals from these communities have historically faced barriers to mainstream competitive sports. The Sports and Youth Welfare Department invites all stakeholders, including sports federations, tribal communities, coaches, and media, to join this extraordinary celebration of tribal athleticism. The Games are expected to attract participants from tribal regions across India, uniting talent, culture, and competition in a historic manner.
Chhattisgarh's Promising Athletes
Chhattisgarh boasts a strong contingent of athletes across various disciplines, with several competitors expected to perform exceptionally well.
Weightlifting: The state’s weightlifting team includes promising lifters Tikeshwar Dhruv, Lucky Markam, and Suresh Kashyap. Tikeshwar, a 16-year-old from Raipur, has trained through self-directed bodyweight exercises and competes in the 60 kg category.
Archery: The archery team features Nishant Patel in the Compound discipline, alongside Akash Raj and Abhilash Raj in Recurve, showcasing a well-rounded competitive presence.
Wrestling: Male wrestlers Raja Dhruv and Arihant Bhoyar are expected to perform well, while Vandana Komara and Rameshwari Nag represent the women’s side, aiming for podium finishes.
Football: The football squad includes Kiran Pisda, Madhu Sidar, Damini Khusro, and Nidhi Lakda, who are anticipated to play key roles in the team's performance.
Athletics: Gajender Thakur is a key contender in the 800 meters, while Digeshwar aims for success in the Long Jump. The relay team, featuring Damru and Gajender, is also viewed as a strong medal prospect.
