Improving Dinking Techniques in Pickleball

Preston Engel, a professional pickleball player, recently highlighted three frequent errors players make while dinking and offered practical advice to boost consistency and control at the kitchen line. In a discussion on his Instagram, Engel noted that many players tend to remain stationary. He explained, "Players often keep their feet fixed at the kitchen line, allowing the ball to get behind them and making contact behind their knee." To address this, he suggested employing a drop step to create necessary space, enabling players to position both their body and paddle behind the ball.

Engel identified a second mistake related to improper positioning. He stated, "Players frequently extend their arms fully while failing to position their bodies behind the ball, which necessitates a backswing." This often results in pop-ups or shots that hit the net. His solution was to keep shoulders aligned with the court and shuffle into position, ensuring the body remains directly behind the ball for better control and consistency.

Furthermore, Engel pointed out that players often lose their balance during shots. He recommended staying under the ball and pushing through at the moment of contact, finishing the swing on the dominant side shoulder to maintain control. He emphasized, "Make sure you are positioned under the ball and push through at the point of contact, finishing your swing on your dominant side shoulder." Engel's insights reveal how minor adjustments in footwork and positioning can significantly improve a player's performance during crucial net exchanges.
