Shubman Gill Shines in Test Match Against England

A tweet from former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen, which called for patience with Shubman Gill, has resurfaced on social media after Gill's impressive double century against England at Edgbaston. This remarkable innings helped India reach a formidable score of 564/7 by tea on the second day of the second Test.

“Kallis averaged 22 in his first 10 Tests and turned out to be arguably the greatest player to play the game. Give @ShubmanGill time to find it, please. He is a serious player.” Pietersen had tweeted back in February 2024.

Pietersen's original tweet came during the second Test of England's tour of India, where Gill had a disappointing first innings, scoring just 34 runs against James Anderson. After struggling in the first Test with scores of 23 and 0, Gill faced criticism. However, by the end of the five-match series, he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer, amassing 452 runs at an impressive average of 56.5.

On Thursday, Gill made history by becoming the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England. He also set a record for the highest score by an Indian batsman on English soil, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's previous record of 221 at the Oval in 1979. During the first session, India scored 109 runs, with Gill and Ravindra Jadeja (who scored 89) forming a formidable partnership of 203 runs for the sixth wicket before Jadeja was dismissed by Josh Tongue. Notably, this remarkable achievement comes in Gill's debut series as Test captain.
