Kevin Pietersen Weighs In on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Potential Return to Test Cricket
Pietersen Comments on Retirement Rumors
Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricketer, has shared his views regarding the speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli potentially returning from their Test cricket retirements. Following India's recent 0-2 defeat at home against South Africa in a Test series, rumors have emerged suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached both players to reconsider their decisions.
Pietersen on the Future of Test Cricket
As the rumors gained traction, Pietersen emphasized the importance of taking them seriously. He pointed out that the future of Test cricket is a significant issue, stating that if Kohli and Sharma are contemplating a comeback, it should be encouraged. "I don't always trust what I read in the media or on social platforms. However, if there is any truth to the idea that both Virat and Rohit are thinking about returning to Test cricket, it should be regarded with utmost seriousness. The survival of Test cricket is a crucial topic, and if the sport's biggest stars wish to participate again, they should be allowed to do so," Pietersen expressed on X.
A Look Back at Kohli and Sharma's Test Careers
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket in May, having amassed 9,230 runs in 123 matches with an average of 46.85. Shortly after, Rohit Sharma also declared his retirement, finishing his Test career with 4,301 runs in 67 matches and an average of 40.57.
Shift to White-Ball Formats
In addition to their Test retirements, both Kohli and Rohit have stepped back from T20I cricket after leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados last year. Currently, they are focusing solely on ODI cricket and are set to participate in a three-match ODI series against South Africa, which begins this Sunday in Ranchi.
