Kevin Pietersen Lauds Sameer Rizvi's Stellar Performance in IPL 2026 Opener
Pietersen Commends Rizvi's Composure
Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricket star, has expressed admiration for Sameer Rizvi of the Delhi Capitals (DC) following his impressive innings against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pietersen noted that he was not taken aback by Rizvi's performance, having observed his potential during the previous season. He pointed out that despite limited chances, Rizvi had previously demonstrated his skills and proved his worth by performing well under pressure.
Pietersen remarked that leading the team to victory in a crucial IPL match is significantly more rewarding than merely accumulating runs in less demanding scenarios. Last year, Pietersen took on the role of mentor for the DC, marking his return to the IPL coaching scene after last playing in the league in 2016. However, he stepped down from this position before the tournament commenced, citing time limitations.
Rizvi's Impactful Performance
"He handled the situation exceptionally well, and I’m not surprised at all. I spent considerable time with Sameer last season and observed his progress closely. He scored a century in a warm-up match but unfortunately didn’t secure a spot in the initial matches of the tournament. However, when he finally got his chance later, he showcased his talent, prompting everyone to recognize him as a serious player worth investing in. Trusting a young player is crucial, and he repaid that trust in this match by performing under pressure. Achieving victory in a significant game, especially the IPL opener with so much attention on you, is far more fulfilling than just scoring a century in a high-scoring game," Pietersen shared on JioHotstar.
DC's Strong Start to the 2026 IPL Season
The Delhi Capitals kicked off their 2026 IPL campaign with an impressive six-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday. Rizvi contributed significantly with an unbeaten 70 runs off just 47 deliveries, aiding his team in successfully chasing a target of 142 runs with six wickets remaining and 17 balls to spare.
