Kartik Tyagi's Remarkable Comeback in IPL 2026: Insights from Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina Commends Kartik Tyagi's Resurgence
Suresh Raina, the former Indian cricket star, has lauded Kartik Tyagi, a fast bowler for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), for his impressive return in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. After facing numerous injuries and inconsistent performances in prior seasons, Tyagi's commitment to fitness during his time away from the league, particularly after going unsold in the 2025 auction, has been pivotal in his comeback. Raina pointed out that Tyagi's remarkable performance this season, where he has claimed 18 wickets in 13 matches, stands in stark contrast to his limited play in earlier years. Raina reminisced about first encountering Tyagi at the age of 15 during a domestic match, praising his early potential, strong work ethic, and reliability. He expressed optimism that if Tyagi continues to maintain his fitness and performance, an opportunity to represent India could be on the horizon.
The Comeback Story of IPL 2026
Raina described Kartik Tyagi as the standout comeback story of IPL 2026, emphasizing his hard work on fitness that has yielded significant results. In 2022, Tyagi participated in only two matches, taking one wicket, and in 2023, he played three games with the same wicket tally. His 2024 season saw him play just one match, and he went unsold in the 2025 auction. However, this hiatus allowed him to concentrate on his fitness and recover from injuries. This season, he has excelled, participating in 13 matches and securing 18 wickets. Raina recalled a match in Bilaspur where he captained Tyagi at just 15 years old, noting his impressive bowling that day. Raina expressed hope for Tyagi's continued success, stating that if he remains fit, a debut for India is certainly achievable.
From Challenges to Triumph
Tyagi's journey began with a promising debut in the IPL in 2020, but injuries hampered his progress across formats. After going unsold in the 2025 auction, he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 30 lakh in December of the previous year. Over his first five IPL seasons, Tyagi accumulated 15 wickets in 20 matches. In a remarkable turnaround, his 18 wickets in IPL 2026 surpass the next best KKR bowler, Vaibhav Arora, who has taken 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.26.
