A Dream Journey Begins

Guwahati, July 11: The story of Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC (KAMSFC) is a remarkable one, originating from the serene hills of Diphu to the prestigious stage of Asia’s oldest football tournament. Established in 2008, the club was created to provide young football enthusiasts in Assam with an opportunity to showcase their talent. Now, they are gearing up for their inaugural appearance in the esteemed Durand Cup, which is set to commence on July 23.

Pride in Representation

“This is a moment of great pride for us,” expressed Waisong Bey, the club's former captain and current manager. “We are not just representing Karbi Anglong; we are representing all of Assam on one of Asia's grandest football platforms.”

The club, which has been built on local talent and grassroots initiatives, will compete in Group D alongside Punjab FC, ITBP FT, and Bodoland FC, with their first match scheduled for July 27 against ITBP FT at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar.

From Humble Beginnings to Great Aspirations

Reflecting on the club's journey, Waisong expresses gratitude towards those who laid its foundation. “Winning trophies was never our primary goal. We aimed to create a positive outlet for the youth and build something significant for our region,” he noted.

The founders of the club—Mukul Kathar (founding president), George Rongpi (general secretary), and Miji Kro (chief administrator)—are recognized for establishing what has become one of Assam’s most promising football teams.

Over the years, their hard work has led to several accolades, including the Assam State Premier League (ASPL) titles in 2015 and 2023-24, along with regional honors such as the KASA Football Championship and the CEM Gold Cup.

Moreover, KAMSFC has achieved promotion to the I-League 2 for the 2025-26 season, marking a significant milestone for a club that began with limited resources.

“This success is a result of the unwavering support from the people of Assam, especially from Karbi Anglong,” Waisong, who also serves as the team’s coach, stated. “We take pride in being a club composed of home-grown players, and our focus remains on providing local talent with a national platform.”

Optimism for the Future

Current club president Sengkan Ronghang and general secretary Bikram Teron share this optimism. “We have always believed in the club’s vision. Competing in the Durand Cup is a monumental achievement,” they remarked.

Waisong had the privilege of representing the club at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the unveiling of the Durand Cup trophies by President Droupadi Murmu on July 4, describing it as “a moment of great inspiration.”

“Being part of that ceremony motivated us and reinforced our belief that we belong on this stage,” he added.

The Challenge of the Durand Cup

The Durand Cup, which first took place in 1888, is returning for its 134th edition this year, with matches scheduled across Kolkata, Shillong, Jamshedpur, Kokrajhar, and Imphal. A total of 24 teams will compete in six groups, with the top team from each group and the two best second-placed teams advancing to the knockout stages.

The tournament will kick off on July 23, featuring Indian Super League (ISL) giants East Bengal FC facing South United FC at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. Other ISL teams participating include Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mohammedan SC, NorthEast United FC, Jamshedpur FC, and Punjab FC.

Defending champions NorthEast United FC will begin their title defense on August 2 in Shillong against the Foreign Services Team.

Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC is the second team from Assam to join this edition, following Bodoland FC’s participation.

“It’s encouraging to see more clubs from Assam entering the Durand Cup,” commented Assam Football Association secretary Dr Sangrang Brahma. “The inclusion of Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC is a testament to their consistent efforts and passion.”

A Dream Realized

For the players, officials, and supporters, the journey to the Durand Cup transcends football; it embodies aspiration, belief, and community spirit.

“What began as a dream is now a reality,” Waisong said, his voice filled with quiet pride. “We aim to make Assam proud—not just by participating, but by competing with heart and determination.”
