Kapil Pokhariya Secures Semifinal Spot

Indian boxer Kapil Pokhariya has successfully reached the semifinals in the men's 90 kg category at the 2026 Asian Games, clinching a medal after a unanimous decision victory over South Korea's Kim Gichae in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Utilizing his height advantage, Kapil began the match with a strong offensive strategy, dominating the first round with precise left hooks, which led to a 5-0 score in his favor.

Continuing his aggressive style in the second round, he landed several clean punches, putting Kim under significant pressure. Although Kim received a standing count after taking multiple hits, he managed to stay in the fight. Kapil again won the round 5-0, with one judge controversially scoring it 8 for Kim.

In the third round, while Kim attempted to increase his aggression, Kapil maintained his effectiveness, controlling the match until the final bell. He was ultimately declared the winner with a unanimous 5-0 decision, securing his place in the semifinals and ensuring a medal for India in the men's 90 kg boxing event. Kapil is now set to compete in the semifinals, aiming for a spot in the gold-medal match.

Lovlina and Priya Also Progress

In addition to Kapil, Indian boxers Lovlina Borgohain and Priya have also advanced to the semifinals in their respective categories at the 2026 Asian Games. Lovlina triumphed over South Korea's Seong Suyeon in the women's 75 kg quarterfinal, while Priya secured victory against Tajikistan's Mijgona Samadova in the women's 60 kg quarterfinal. Both wins guarantee medals for India.
