Kanpur has recently emerged as a new hub for pickleball, highlighted by the PickleSpin PWR 50 Cup, which commenced on February 27 and will conclude on March 1. This tournament marks the city's first event of the season and has seen enthusiastic participation, including a surge of last-minute entries. As the event reached its final day on Sunday, the group-stage matches had already concluded.

Among the local competitors was Archie Gupta, who participated in the mixed doubles category. Although she only registered for this event, Gupta faced challenges, losing two of her league matches and failing to advance to the knockout rounds. Nevertheless, she praised the initiative to host a structured pickleball tournament in Kanpur.

In an interview with a sports outlet after her matches, Gupta expressed her thoughts on the significance of the event for the local sports culture. She stated, “This is the first pickleball tournament organized here, and I believe the organizers have done a commendable job. It’s a significant milestone for Kanpur.”

Gupta shared her experience in the mixed doubles category, noting that the overall arrangements were satisfactory. “There is always room for improvement, but considering it’s their first time hosting such an event, it has been well managed,” she added.

Looking ahead, Gupta is optimistic about the future of pickleball in Kanpur, stating, “I believe there will be more tournaments in Kanpur moving forward. This is beneficial for the city and local players. I encourage everyone to come and participate.”

She also emphasized the fitness advantages of pickleball and its appeal to players of other racquet sports. “It’s an excellent sport for fitness and strength. Players from badminton, table tennis, and lawn tennis can easily adapt since many skills overlap. It’s a sport everyone should try,” she remarked.

The three-day competition featured 70 players competing across five categories, providing a competitive platform for emerging talent and indicating a growing interest in pickleball within Kanpur.
