Rabada's Return and Squad Overview

South Africa has named Kagiso Rabada in their preliminary lineup for the upcoming three-Test series against Australia, which kicks off on October 9. His participation in the first match will be evaluated during an intra-squad match scheduled for next week. Rabada is currently on the mend from a hamstring injury he incurred during winter training. Notably, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman, and Kwena Maphaka, who are also recovering from similar injuries, have not been included in the squad.

Anrich Nortje, who is no longer under a central contract with Cricket South Africa, has been added to the extended squad and is poised to make his first Test appearance since March 2023. The squad comprises seven fast bowlers.

Gerald Coetzee, who made his return to international cricket in the first ODI against Australia last week, has also been selected. His last Test appearance was in November 2024.

Additionally, South Africa has included three spinners: Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, and Senuran Muthusamy, all of whom participated in the previous World Test Championship cycle.
