Julian Metherell Takes the Helm at MCC

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced Julian Metherell as its new president, succeeding Ed Smith, a former England cricketer and selector. Metherell, who currently chairs the London Spirit, will officially take on this prestigious role in October. With a long-standing association with the MCC and a background in global finance, he is set to step into a significant ceremonial position in the cricketing world, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

A Background in Finance and Cricket Governance

Metherell has an impressive career in finance, having served as a partner at Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2011, where he was the CEO of the UK investment banking division towards the end of his tenure. He is also the founder and CFO of Genel Energy, with interests spanning the energy and shipping industries. In addition to his financial career, Metherell has been actively involved in cricket administration, serving as the non-executive chair of the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024 and currently leading the advisory board at Cambridge University's Judge Business School.

Metherell's Sentiments on His Appointment

"I am deeply honored to assume the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many cricketing legends," Metherell expressed in a statement from the club. "My long-standing connection with MCC and the cherished memories I have at Lord's make this an exciting time to be involved, especially as we embark on a new era of professional cricket ownership."

Key Role in London Spirit's Equity Negotiations

Metherell was pivotal in the MCC's negotiations during the 2025 Hundred equity sale, where a consortium led by Silicon Valley, including Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora, acquired a 49% stake in London Spirit for around £145 million, marking it as the highest-valued franchise in the league. Following this transaction, he became the chair of London Spirit after the operational control transitioned from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to the new ownership group in October of the previous year.

Support from Ed Smith and Future Prospects

Ed Smith, who nominated Metherell as his successor, commended his combination of business acumen and love for cricket. "In this exciting time for MCC, I wanted a successor with extensive expertise and a genuine passion for the game and the club," Smith remarked. "Julian Metherell is a trusted friend to cricket and an outstanding candidate." Metherell's appointment comes at a crucial time for MCC, as London Spirit is set to play a significant role in shaping the club's future. Earlier this year, the franchise revealed a new identity that incorporates MCC's traditional egg-and-bacon colors into its royal blue design. During Metherell's presidency, Lord's is also expected to host both the men's and women's Australian teams during the 2027 Ashes series.
