Josh Philippe Supports Babar Azam Amidst Form Struggles Ahead of T20 World Cup

Babar Azam's Recent Performance Issues

Josh Philippe, an Australian cricketer and teammate in the Big Bash League (BBL), is expressing confidence in Babar Azam's ability to regain his form before the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Babar has faced challenges recently, managing only two half-centuries in T20 internationals since the last T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies last year. In 2023, he has accumulated just 206 runs across eight innings, averaging 34.33 with a strike rate of 114.44, which includes two half-centuries.

This decline in performance has resulted in Babar dropping to 31st place in the ICC Men's T20I Batting Rankings, a concerning development for the seasoned player as the T20 World Cup approaches in less than two months.

Babar's Current Situation in Australia

Currently, Babar is in Australia participating in the BBL with the Sydney Sixers. Unfortunately, his performance has not improved, with scores of just two and nine in his first two matches.

Philippe's Confidence in Babar

Philippe believes that Babar's talent will shine through soon. "He is a world-class player," Philippe remarked, as reported by ICC. "Adapting to the bouncy Australian pitches can be tough, but after a few games and practice sessions, he will be back to his best."

"His track record is impressive, and I am confident he will score runs in the next match," he added.

Philippe's Aspirations and Team Spirit

Philippe is also aiming to catch the attention of national selectors as he seeks a spot in Australia's squad for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He showcased good form during recent white-ball matches against India and has started the BBL strongly, scoring a team-high 46 runs in the Sixers' latest game against Adelaide.

Batting at number three, Philippe is willing to adapt his role to allow Babar to focus on finding his rhythm as an opener. "I am open to playing any role needed," Philippe stated. "I look forward to forming a strong partnership with Babar and learning from him on the field. He is a great guy, and we are enjoying his presence in the team."
