Jonty Rhodes Attributes Heinrich Klaasen's IPL Success to Family Time
Jonty Rhodes on Klaasen's Recent Performance
Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes believes that Heinrich Klaasen's impressive performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) can be attributed to the time he has spent with his family, away from the pressures of international cricket.
Rhodes, renowned for his exceptional fielding skills, is now a co-owner of the Rotterdam franchise in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), alongside fellow South African stars Klaasen and Faf du Plessis, with Madhukhar Shree serving as the managing partner.
After Klaasen's remarkable 65* against the Mumbai Indians, Rhodes commented, "His current form in T20 cricket may stem from enjoying a less pressured environment. International cricket offers no downtime," he noted.
Klaasen's Stellar IPL Form
Currently, Klaasen ranks among the top performers in IPL 2026, amassing 414 runs in nine innings, boasting an average of 59.14 and a strike rate of 157.14, which includes four half-centuries. Despite retiring from international cricket last year, he continues to thrive in the T20 circuit. This season marks his fourth consecutive season with over 400 runs for SRH, showcasing his dual ability to both attack and stabilize the middle order, contributing significantly to SRH's success.
His last international match was during the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal against New Zealand in Pakistan, after which he decided to retire from international play.
The Need for Downtime
Rhodes shared insights from discussions with Faf du Plessis regarding the necessity for players to take breaks from international cricket. The combination of international commitments and lucrative T20 leagues has led to a congested schedule, forcing players to balance their passion for representing their country with the financial incentives of franchise cricket.
"From that perspective, Klaasen may be playing with remarkable freedom because he is not engaged in international cricket. We've seen players like Quinton de Kock retire and return to international play successfully. Players need emotional and mental breaks more than physical ones," he explained.
"Klaasen is enjoying that downtime, spending quality time with his family, which is crucial," he added.

Jonty's Take on Proteas' Future
As South Africa prepares to co-host the upcoming 50-over World Cup with Zimbabwe and Namibia, the team aims to end their trophy drought in limited-overs cricket. After reaching the semifinals of the T20 World Cup this year, Jonty emphasized the need for the Proteas to focus on winning, stating, "Get to the final and win it. That is it. As simple as that."
