Following Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket, England batsman Joe Root is expected to take on the role of Test captain once again. His leadership could extend through the upcoming men's Ashes series against Australia, scheduled from June to August next year.
Coaching Changes and Harry Brook's Prospects
Root previously captained England in 65 Tests from 2017 to 2026, achieving 27 victories, 27 losses, and 11 draws, resulting in a win percentage of 41.53. His return as captain would allow Harry Brook to focus on leading the white-ball teams as they prepare for the 2027 Cricket World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup, under the guidance of white-ball coach Brendon McCullum.

The ECB is now tasked with finding a replacement for McCullum as the head coach for the Test team, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick likely stepping in as interim head coach for the series against Pakistan.
