Joe Root Approaches Historic ODI Record

Cardiff [UK], June 1: England's prominent batter Joe Root is just 42 runs shy of overtaking former World Cup captain Eoin Morgan to become the leading run-scorer for England in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Root will have the opportunity to make history during the second ODI against the West Indies in Cardiff this Sunday.

Throughout his career, Root has amassed 6,916 runs with an impressive average of 48.02, including 17 centuries and 51 half-centuries, with his highest score being 133 not out. He currently ranks as England's second-highest run-scorer in ODIs.

Leading the chart is Morgan, who scored 6,957 runs across 225 matches and 207 innings, averaging 39.75, with 13 centuries and 42 fifties, and a top score of 148.

Interestingly, reaching 84 more runs will make Root the first England player to achieve 7,000 runs in ODIs.

This year, in eight ODIs, Root has scored 428 runs at an average of 53.50, boasting a strike rate exceeding 90, which includes a century and three fifties, with his best score being 120. Since England's World Cup victory in 2019, his ODI appearances have decreased, accumulating 1,060 runs in 35 matches at an average of 35.33, featuring one century and nine fifties.

During this year's Champions Trophy, Root was England's second-highest run-scorer, amassing 225 runs in three innings at an average of 75.00, which included his first century in six years along with a fifty.

In Test cricket, Root has already established himself as a top run-scorer, surpassing Alastair Cook last year. In 153 Tests, he has scored 13,006 runs at an average of 50.80, with 36 centuries and 65 fifties, his highest score being 262. He ranks as the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test history and is closing in on Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs.
