Jasprit Bumrah Matches Ishant Sharma's Test Wicket Record in England
Bumrah Equals Ishant Sharma's Record
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has matched the remarkable record of legendary cricketer Ishant Sharma for the most wickets taken by an Indian in Test matches played in England.
In the first session of the fourth day of the fourth Test between India and England, Bumrah recorded bowling figures of 2/112 across 33 overs, claiming the wickets of Jamie Smith and Liam Dawson.
With these two dismissals, Bumrah has now equaled Ishant's tally of 51 Test wickets. The 31-year-old has achieved this in just 12 matches in England, maintaining an impressive average of 26.19, which includes four five-wicket hauls.
Ishant Sharma's Career Stats
In contrast, Ishant Sharma has played 15 Test matches in England, also securing 51 wickets but at a higher average of 33.35, with two five-wicket hauls to his credit.
Bumrah Joins Elite Asian Bowlers
Earlier on Friday, Bumrah reached the milestone of 50 wickets in England, becoming the third Asian bowler to achieve this feat, following Wasim Akram (53) and Ishant Sharma (51).
He accomplished this during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar trophy at Old Trafford, where he now boasts 50 wickets in 12 matches, averaging 26.38 with an economy rate of 2.79.
Bumrah concluded the third day of the fourth Test with 15 overs bowled, conceding 48 runs and taking one wicket, bringing his overall figures to 1/95 across 28 overs, including his performance from day two.
Performance in the England Test Series
Despite being the third-highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 wickets in six innings at an average of 26, Bumrah's performance has been viewed as somewhat underwhelming.
This comes after a lengthy injury layoff, during which he excelled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 against Australia, taking a record 32 wickets at an average of 13.06, including two four-wicket hauls and three five-wicket hauls.
