Jasprit Bumrah Explains Decision to Decline Captaincy for England Test Series

Bumrah Addresses Captaincy Decision
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has finally spoken out about not taking on the captaincy of the Indian Test team. He revealed that he turned down the opportunity to lead the team during the England tour, considering his workload. Following his decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed star batsman Shubman Gill as the new captain ahead of the five-match Test series starting on June 20 in England.
The 31-year-old Bumrah shared his thoughts with Sky Sports, stating that he had discussions with the BCCI regarding his workload in light of Rohit and Virat's retirements during the IPL. He consulted with those who treated his back and even spoke to the surgeon, who advised him to be cautious about his workload. After these discussions, it was concluded that he should be careful, leading him to inform the BCCI that he did not want to take on a leadership role since he might not be able to participate in all five Test matches.
Bumrah further explained that while the BCCI was considering him for the captaincy, he felt it would not be fair for the team. He emphasized that having one captain for three matches and another for two in a five-match series would not be appropriate. He has always prioritized the team's needs, especially after suffering an injury during the fifth Test in Australia, which prevented him from playing in the ICC Champions Trophy due to a back injury.
