Gillespie's Comeback to Pakistan Cricket

Jason Gillespie has made his return to Pakistan, taking on the role of head coach for the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) after a hiatus of over a year. Upon his arrival, the former Australian fast bowler opted out of the traditional 'arrival videos' typically filmed at the team hotel.

Previously, Gillespie served as the head coach for Pakistan's Test team, a tenure that ended amid controversy. He claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) failed to settle his payments, while the PCB countered that Gillespie did not adhere to the four-month notice requirement outlined in his contract. He ultimately resigned from his position in December 2024.

As the PSL 2026 season approaches, set to kick off on March 26, Gillespie emphasized that his new role would be focused on business. Despite his firm approach, he expressed enthusiasm about re-engaging with Pakistan's cricketing landscape. "I'm very excited to be part of the Kingsmen team in Hyderabad. There's a lot to anticipate, and I can't wait to get started," he shared with ESPNcricinfo in January, indicating his eagerness to collaborate with both emerging and seasoned players in the league.

His decision to join a PSL franchise has surprised many, especially considering the sudden nature of his exit from the national team. Gillespie stepped down as Pakistan's red-ball coach just days before a two-Test series in South Africa, following a fallout with the PCB.

In a candid discussion about his departure, Gillespie did not shy away from expressing his frustrations. "I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB dismissed our senior assistant coach without any communication with me. As Head Coach, I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were several other issues that left me feeling utterly humiliated," he stated during a Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter).

He also voiced concerns regarding the leadership within the PCB, criticizing chairman Mohsin Naqvi for not attending a 'Connection Camp' in person. While Gillespie traveled from Australia and Gary Kirsten from South Africa, Naqvi participated virtually despite being located in Lahore.

As Gillespie embarks on this new journey in the PSL, his return brings both excitement and a wealth of experience to the league, even as the circumstances surrounding his previous exit continue to cast a shadow.
