In Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Jarmanpreet Singh, captain of the SG Pipers Men's hockey team and a key player in India's bronze medal achievement at the Olympics, has outlined the significant challenges facing the Indian men's hockey team as they prepare for a busy international schedule.
Jarmanpreet emphasized that the team's focus is now directed towards the major tournaments lined up for next year, stating, “Our primary challenges ahead are the World Cup and the Asian Games, which are the key events following the Hockey India League (HIL) and the Pro League.”
On a personal note, the seasoned defender expressed the importance of maintaining consistency and making valuable contributions to the team. He remarked, “For me, the challenge lies in how much more I can contribute, give my best in each match, and assist my team in performing well.”
Reflecting on the Hockey India League, Jarmanpreet admitted that the last season was disappointing for the SG Pipers franchise, which finished last with just five points, mirroring the women's team's performance.
He candidly assessed the previous campaign, stating, “Last season was quite poor. Our goal this time is to aim for a top-four finish, enhance our attacking play, and focus on scoring field goals. This excitement is crucial as we strive to rise from the bottom.”
The Hockey India League is set to kick off on January 3, with the SG Pipers playing their first match on January 5 against HIL GC.
Jarmanpreet also highlighted the potential of young players who could significantly impact both the SG Pipers and the national team in the future. He mentioned, “There are numerous players who can secure their spots in senior teams. Many have performed admirably in the World Cup, including talents like Manmeet Singh, Arshdeep Singh, and several promising goalkeepers. We have a wealth of young talent ready to emerge.”
