Japan Dominates Tunisia 4-0 in Historic FIFA World Cup Match
Japan's Stellar Performance
In a remarkable display, Japan triumphed over Tunisia with a score of 4-0, moving closer to advancing in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This match marked the 1000th game in World Cup history, and Japan made it unforgettable. Following a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, Japan needed a victory to enhance their qualification chances, and they delivered impressively. This match also marked the first occasion where Japan scored four goals in a World Cup encounter.
Ayase Ueda was a standout performer, netting two goals, while Daichi Kamada and Junya Itō contributed one each, bringing Japan's points to four, equal with the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup standings. The Netherlands currently leads the group due to a superior goal difference.
Despite establishing a 2-0 lead within the first 30 minutes, Japan maintained relentless pressure on a struggling Tunisian defense. Coach Hajime Moriyasu expressed the importance of scoring as many goals as possible to build team confidence, aiming to replicate this performance against Sweden.
Tunisia's defeat resulted in their elimination from the tournament, while Japan secured at least a third-place finish, which could still allow them to progress if they do not qualify directly.
Challenges for Tunisia
New Coach, Same Result
After a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Sweden, Tunisia appointed Hervé Renard, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations champion, in hopes of revitalizing their campaign. However, they struggled to contain Japan's swift attacks and failed to create significant scoring opportunities.
Renard acknowledged the challenge ahead, emphasizing the need for professionalism as they prepare for their next match against the Netherlands. Kamada opened the scoring early in the fourth minute, marking the fastest goal in Japan's World Cup history. Positioned perfectly for a cross from Keito Nakamura, he tapped in his second goal of the tournament.
Ueda showcased his skill in the 31st minute, driving towards the Tunisian box and firing a stunning shot from outside the area to extend Japan's lead to 2-0. The Feyenoord striker had an outstanding club season, finishing as the top scorer in the Eredivisie.
In the 69th minute, Ueda assisted Itō for Japan's third goal, and he later scored his second of the match with a brilliant header in the 83rd minute, concluding a stellar performance for the Samurai Blue. Japan, unbeaten against European teams in 90 minutes since 2019, will face Sweden in Dallas on Thursday, while Tunisia will meet the Netherlands in Kansas City simultaneously.
