Jannik Sinner's Wimbledon Journey in Jeopardy After Injury

Injury Concerns for Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon 2025
World No. 1 and Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner's future in the ongoing Wimbledon 2025 is uncertain following a right elbow injury sustained during his fourth-round match against Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov on July 7.
Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a walkover when Dimitrov had to retire due to a serious injury affecting his right arm. At the time of the retirement, Sinner was behind in the first two sets and tied 2-2 in the third.
Dimitrov, visibly emotional, shook hands with Sinner before withdrawing from the match, allowing Sinner to progress to his fourth Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Details of Sinner's Injury
While Dimitrov's injury drew significant attention, Sinner's own injury raised concerns as he fell on his right elbow during a slide while returning a backhand shot. He took a medical timeout to address the injury, which had already affected his performance, leading to losses in the first two sets.
Sinner appeared uncomfortable during treatment, as shown in a tweet from The Tennis Letter, expressing hope that the injury was not severe.
MRI Scan to Determine Injury Severity
In a post-match press conference, Sinner described his fall as 'unfortunate' and noted that he felt pain during serves and volleys. He is scheduled for an MRI scan to evaluate the extent of the injury and plans to adjust his gameplay accordingly.
"It was an unfortunate fall – I reviewed the video, and it didn't appear severe, but I felt significant discomfort during serves and forehands," Sinner stated.
"We will conduct an MRI tomorrow to check for any serious issues and make necessary adjustments."
Future Participation in Doubt
The results of the MRI scan remain undisclosed, leaving Sinner's participation in the upcoming quarterfinal match uncertain. However, he did not indicate any intention to withdraw from the tournament, suggesting he will evaluate his condition before making a final decision.
This marks Sinner's fourth quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon, with his best result being a semifinal finish against Novak Djokovic.
Aiming for Wimbledon Glory
Sinner is pursuing his first Wimbledon title and his fourth Grand Slam victory, having previously won the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, as well as the US Open in 2024.
After narrowly missing out on the French Open title this year against Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner is eager to make a strong comeback at Wimbledon and add this prestigious title to his achievements.
He is set to face American rising star Ben Shelton in the quarterfinal on July 9.
