Miami, March 28: Jannik Sinner, currently ranked World No. 2, has made a remarkable entry into the final of the Miami Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event, following a commanding victory over Alexander Zverev. This win marks another step in his quest for a consecutive title on the tour.
Just days after securing his first title at Indian Wells, Sinner defeated Zverev with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4) on Friday evening, extending his impressive streak to 32 consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
In the upcoming final scheduled for Sunday, Sinner will compete against Czech player Jiri Lehecka, who reached his first Masters 1000 final by overcoming Arthur Fils with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
All eyes were on Sinner during the semifinals as he aimed to capitalize on the early exit of World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, hoping to clinch the Miami Open title and narrow the ranking gap.
Expressing his joy at reaching the final, Sinner stated, "My main goal was to come here and play some good tennis. Standing here again in the final means a lot to me." This marks his fourth championship match in Miami.
With just one victory needed, Sinner is on the verge of becoming the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to achieve the 'Sunshine Double' by winning both Indian Wells and Miami.
Having won his last seven encounters against Zverev, including two this year, Sinner now leads their ATP head-to-head series 8-4.
In the opening set, Sinner faced a break point early on but quickly responded by increasing his aggression, breaking Zverev's serve with a powerful forehand to take a 3-1 lead.
During the second set, Zverev raised his game and defended two break points at 4-4, but Sinner maintained his composure, held serve, and forced a tie-break. The momentum shifted in Sinner's favor when he took a 5/4 lead after Zverev mishit an overhead, ultimately securing the win.
As Sinner heads into the final against Lehecka, he holds a 3-0 advantage in their rivalry, having won their last encounter at Roland Garros last year in straight sets. With no ATP Rankings points to defend this year, a title win would bring Sinner within 1,540 points of World No. 1 Alcaraz.
