Jalandhar Athletes Shine as They Join Indian Team for Commonwealth Games 2026
Jalandhar Athletes Selected for Commonwealth Games
Three talented athletes from Jalandhar district in Punjab have earned their spots in the Indian athletics team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026, set to take place in Glasgow starting July 22.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has recently unveiled a 32-member squad, featuring sprinter Gurindervir Singh and Rashdeep Kaur, who hails from Sangrur but has trained in Jalandhar for a decade.
Gurindervir, a Jalandhar native, will compete in the men's 100-meter race, while Rashdeep has secured a position in the mixed 4x400-meter relay team.
In a further testament to Jalandhar's athletic prowess, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who trained under a local coach, has also been chosen to represent India in shot put at the Commonwealth Games.
Rashdeep's path to international competition is particularly remarkable. Coming from a humble background, her family faced financial difficulties, with her father managing just 2 acres of farmland.
Her mother, Gurpinder Kaur, shared the sacrifices made to support Rashdeep's athletic dreams, stating, “We didn’t have much, but we always encouraged her aspirations.” Despite their struggles, the family was committed to ensuring Rashdeep could chase her goals independently.
Both Gurindervir and Rashdeep trained under the esteemed coach Sarabjit Singh Happy in Jalandhar. Happy expressed his pride in their selection, calling it a significant achievement for the city and wishing them success at the Commonwealth Games.
The accomplishments of these athletes have further enriched Jalandhar's vibrant sports culture, showcasing its ability to nurture talent that shines on the global stage.
