Jacques Kallis Discusses Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Prospects for the 2027 World Cup
Kallis on Ro-Ko's 2027 World Cup Future
Renowned South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis shared his thoughts on the potential participation of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the 2027 ODI World Cup set to take place in South Africa. Kallis believes both players deserve to be part of this significant event.
Currently, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are focused solely on ODIs, having stepped away from Test cricket in 2025 and T20Is in 2024. Despite their impressive performances throughout the year in ODIs, concerns have been raised regarding whether their limited game time might affect their performance as they age, especially with both players nearing their 40s by the time the tournament arrives. Rohit will be in his 40s, while Virat will be in his late 30s.
In a conversation with a media outlet, Kallis remarked, "Virat knows his body well enough to decide when to retire. I hope he can exit on a high note. He is a fantastic player, and Rohit deserves the same opportunity."
Last year, both 'Ro-Ko' were India's leading run-scorers in ODIs, with Virat accumulating 651 runs in 13 matches at an impressive average of 65.10, including three centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 135. Rohit, on the other hand, scored 650 runs in 14 innings, averaging 50.00 with a strike rate exceeding 100, featuring two centuries and four fifties, and a best score of 121*.
Optimism for Proteas' T20 World Cup Hopes
Kallis expressed his optimism regarding the South African team's prospects in the upcoming T20 World Cup. He hopes for a bit of luck to favor the team as they aim for success. The Proteas narrowly missed out on the T20 World Cup title in 2024, losing to India in the final.
"This tournament should provide the players with a good foundation for the upcoming event. They will need some luck to secure a win, and I hope everything aligns for us," Kallis stated.
Praise for SA20's Impact on SA Cricket
Kallis commended the SA20 league for offering South African cricketers, particularly the younger generation, invaluable experience by playing alongside seasoned professionals and in front of large audiences. He is hopeful that this initiative will contribute positively to the growth of South African cricket.
"SA20 has been beneficial for our cricket; younger players are gaining experience with older players and international coaches while playing in front of big crowds. I hope this trend continues to grow," Kallis concluded.
