Jacob Duffy Discusses New Zealand's Struggles in ODI Series Against India
Jacob Duffy on Defending Totals
New Zealand's fast bowler Jacob Duffy acknowledged that the late starts during the current home series against India have significantly impacted his team's ability to defend their totals. Following a five-wicket loss in the first ODI at Eden Park, Duffy noted that New Zealand was bowled out for 185 after being asked to bat first, while India successfully chased down a revised target of 143 in just 32 overs due to rain interruptions. This marked the fourth instance in five matches on this tour where New Zealand could not defend their score.
Impact of Match Timing
The five-match T20I series commenced at 8 PM local time, whereas the ODIs started at 3 PM. Duffy, who recorded figures of 3/49 in the opening ODI, expressed that the conditions later in the day made it challenging to defend a target. He remarked, "Winning the toss and opting to bowl first is a common strategy for a reason." While he did not claim it was impossible to defend, he pointed out that even slight moisture in the pitch can complicate matters. Duffy observed that the rain contributed to the moisture that would typically come from dew.
Performance Analysis
Throughout the series, New Zealand batted first every time India won the toss and chose to field. The only successful defense of a total occurred in the fourth T20I, where New Zealand's record score of 259 was too high for India to chase. Duffy admitted that a score of 185 was insufficient at Eden Park, especially against a strong Indian batting lineup that effectively utilized the conditions during their innings.
Acknowledging Indian Bowlers
Duffy praised India's bowling attack, which included Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, and Anshul Kamboj, as they took all nine wickets, with one run-out. He commended the Indian bowlers for their seam work and effective use of bounce. Indian captain Shubman Gill had emphasized the need for tall fast bowlers ahead of the first ODI, with Brar being one of the taller pacers being tested as India prepares for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Looking Ahead
Despite the modest target, New Zealand managed to claim five wickets during India's chase, including three in quick succession after Gill and Virat Kohli formed a solid 113-run partnership for the second wicket. However, Duffy felt that the late breakthroughs were too little, too late to alter the match's outcome. He stated, "We are determined for this series and will not back down. We aim to show our strength against these players." New Zealand is now focused on bouncing back in the second ODI to level the five-match series.
