Jacob Bethell Celebrates Emotional Maiden Test Century in Ashes 2025-26
Jacob Bethell's Historic Moment
On November 7, during the fourth day of the fifth Test in the Ashes 2025-26 series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), England's Jacob Bethell achieved a significant milestone by scoring his first Test century. His family was overwhelmed with joy as they witnessed this remarkable achievement.
Bethell made his debut in the Ashes during the fourth Test, stepping in for Ollie Pope. He played a crucial role in England's first Test victory on Australian soil since 2011, contributing 40 runs in a successful chase of 175 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Despite a disappointing first innings where he scored only 10 runs, Bethell rebounded impressively in the second innings.
Bethell's Century and Family's Pride
Coming in to bat after the early dismissal of Zak Crawley at 4/1, Bethell partnered with Ben Duckett to form a solid 81-run partnership for the second wicket. After Duckett was out for 42, Bethell continued to build momentum with Joe Root, adding 32 runs before Root fell for just 6.
The young batter found strong support from vice-captain Harry Brook, with whom he shared a 102-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bethell's ability to balance patience and aggression was key to his success, ultimately leading him to his maiden Test century.
As he reached 99, Bethell struck a four off Beau Webster, marking his first-class century. The crowd erupted in applause, and his family, particularly his parents, were visibly emotional, celebrating this proud moment.
Setting the Stage for a Thrilling Finale
After securing his century, Bethell remained a pillar for England, finishing the innings unbeaten on 142 runs from 232 balls. His performance helped England reach a total of 302/8, establishing a 119-run lead by the end of Day 4, keeping the Ashes series exciting.
Following a series of underwhelming performances, Ollie Pope was replaced by Bethell for the Boxing Day Test. After his impressive innings at the MCG, Bethell expressed his ambition to secure a permanent position in the team, stating, "I’ve still got a lot more to do to call it my position." He aims to solidify his role and contribute consistently to the team's success.
