Italy's Historic Qualification

On July 11, the Italian cricket team made history by becoming the first from Italy to qualify for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Despite a 9-wicket defeat to the Netherlands in the final of the Europe Qualifier, Italy secured second place in the points table, earning their spot in next year's tournament.

Under the leadership of former Australian cricketer Joe Burns, Italy participated in four matches during the qualifier. They achieved two victories, suffered one loss, and had one match abandoned, accumulating a total of 5 points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.612. This NRR was superior to Jersey's +0.306, which also had 5 points but fell short in NRR. Italy's crucial win against Jersey early in the tournament significantly contributed to their qualification.

Netherlands Leads the Qualifiers

The Netherlands also qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026, finishing at the top of the European Qualifier standings. They won 3 out of 4 matches, including a decisive victory over Italy in their final game. The Dutch team ended with 6 points and the highest NRR of +1.281 in the group, with their only loss coming against Scotland.
