Ishan Kishan's Humorous Take on Shubman Gill's Captaincy After ODI Victory
India's Dominance in the Second ODI Against Afghanistan
In a thrilling second ODI match against Afghanistan at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on June 17, Ishan Kishan, a left-handed batter for Team India, humorously teased captain Shubman Gill after narrowly missing out on a double century.
Both Gill (154 runs) and Kishan (125 runs) played pivotal roles in establishing a formidable total of 402 runs, forming a significant 224-run partnership for the third wicket. The Indian bowlers then restricted Afghanistan to 232 runs, resulting in a convincing 170-run victory and a 2-0 lead in the series. The duo's performance was instrumental in overpowering the Afghan bowlers.
Their partnership was crucial, as they dismantled the Afghan bowling lineup, setting a target that proved insurmountable for the visitors, despite Rahmat Shah's commendable effort.
Ishan Kishan's Playful Banter with Shubman Gill
Following the series win, a light-hearted exchange between Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill went viral on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
In a video shared by the BCCI, Kishan humorously accused Gill of 'stealing' his chance at a double century, claiming that his score was affected when Gill urged him to take risks and rotate the strike.
Kishan joked, "Mujhe 6 chakke marwane ke chakkar mein mera 70 runs kam kar diya," which translates to, "It cost me 70 runs in an attempt to make me hit 6 sixes."
Gill responded by clarifying that his intention was to boost the team's scoring rate, to which Kishan agreed, causing laughter among their teammates.
Looking Ahead: India's Quest for a Series Sweep
With the series secured, Team India, under Shubman Gill's leadership, is now focused on achieving a clean sweep in the final ODI against Afghanistan.
The team has excelled in both batting and bowling, and the upcoming match offers a chance for the management to evaluate bench strength and provide opportunities for less experienced players. This series is also part of India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, aiming to solidify their core team and finalize combinations.
With seasoned players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma alongside Gill, the team is balancing youthful energy with experienced talent. After the Afghanistan series, India will face England in a three-match ODI series in July-August, followed by home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka.
