BJD Criticizes BJP Over Hockey Management

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly neglecting hockey, following a show-cause notice issued by Hockey India to the Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO), suggesting a downgrade from permanent to associate membership.

During a press briefing in Bhubaneswar, former sports minister Tushar Kanti Behera accused the BJP government of mismanaging the HAO.

He stated, "Hockey, a source of pride for Odisha, is being undermined by the BJP administration. The state risks losing its permanent status in Hockey India, which is not in line with Odia pride," as he addressed reporters.

Behera emphasized the emotional connection the people of Odisha have with hockey, crediting former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for elevating the sport's status in the state and nationwide.

He noted that under Patnaik's leadership, the state government sponsored Indian Hockey. "However, the current 'double engine' government's neglect over the last two years has led to a decline in the sport's quality in Odisha," Behera claimed.

The Odisha government has yet to respond to the BJD's allegations.

Hockey India's notice to HAO stems from claims of non-compliance with the federation's regulations.

This decision was made during Hockey India's Executive Committee meeting on October 6, following a negative report from the Electoral Officer that postponed HAO's elections originally scheduled for October 3.

Hockey India has identified eight significant concerns, including serious operational deficiencies within HAO's 30 district units.

The federation pointed out that key roles such as president and secretary in all district associations are currently held by administrative officials, including District Magistrates and Sub-Collectors, rather than being elected.

Additionally, Hockey India noted that none of the district units had provided election notices, minutes, or results to confirm that their governing bodies were established through a proper electoral process.

The lack of necessary documentation has hindered the finalization of the electoral roll for HAO elections.

HAO has been given a two-week deadline to present comprehensive documentation, including evidence of elections and required statutory approvals. Non-compliance may lead to formal reclassification proceedings by Hockey India's Affiliation Committee and its General Body.
