Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, has emphasized the importance of captain Suryakumar Yadav enhancing his batting skills against stronger teams. This statement followed India's Super 8 triumph over the West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026, held at Eden Gardens on March 1. In this match, Sanju Samson's impressive unbeaten score of 97 led India to a five-wicket victory.
India successfully chased down a target of 196 runs, with Samson's remarkable innings comprising 97 runs off just 50 balls, featuring 12 boundaries and four sixes. In contrast, Suryakumar managed only 18 runs from 16 balls, prompting Pathan to stress the necessity for the captain to deliver stronger performances in crucial games.
Concerns Over Abhishek Sharma's Form
Pathan also expressed concerns regarding Abhishek Sharma's ongoing difficulties at the crease. The opener once again fell short, scoring a mere 10 runs against the West Indies. Pathan pointed out flaws in Sharma's batting technique, noting that his back knee bends too much and his weight shifts backward during his shots. He recommended that Sharma focus on distributing more weight onto his front foot to help him regain his form.
Tilak Varma's Evolving Role in the Team
In the same discussion, Pathan commended Tilak Varma for his quick-fire 27 runs off 15 balls. Varma batted at No. 5, a shift from his usual No. 3 position, and played a crucial role in revitalizing India's innings by scoring 17 runs off one over against Shamar Joseph. Pathan noted that Varma's role has changed, and his performance metrics should be evaluated accordingly.
