Pathan Praises South Africa's Game Strategy

Irfan Pathan, a former all-rounder for India, has lauded South Africa for their exceptional tactical insight during the ongoing T20 World Cup. He described their decision-making as exhibiting 'solid game awareness and elite game IQ.' Pathan's remarks followed South Africa's impressive bowling performance that limited the West Indies to 176 runs for 8 wickets in a pivotal Super 8 match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Strategic Decisions Pay Off

In a night match against India at the same venue, South Africa chose to bat first on a black-soil pitch, which is known to slow down and favor spinners as the game progresses. This strategic choice proved beneficial as they applied scoreboard pressure in tough conditions, ultimately defeating the defending champions by 76 runs in their Super 8 opener.

Pathan Highlights Tactical Masterclass

On social media platform X, Pathan emphasized that South Africa has demonstrated superior understanding of the playing conditions compared to other teams in the tournament. He noted their differing strategies in two key matches, stating, 'No one has read conditions better than South Africa at this World Cup.' He elaborated on their tactics, mentioning, 'In the night game against India, they batted first on black soil, while in today's afternoon match, they opted to chase on red soil, leveraging the bounce. That is solid game awareness and elite game IQ.'

South Africa's Bowling Excellence

In the match against the West Indies, South Africa's bowlers were instrumental in restricting their opponents to 176 runs in 20 overs. At one point, the West Indies struggled at 83 runs for 7 wickets in just 11 overs. However, Romario Shepherd (52 not out off 37 balls, including three fours and four sixes) and Jason Holder (49 runs off 31 balls, featuring four boundaries and three sixes) formed a crucial partnership, adding 89 runs to help their team reach a more respectable total.

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada (2 wickets for 22 runs), Lungi Ngidi (3 wickets for 30 runs), and Corbin Bosch (2 wickets for 31 runs) were the standout bowlers.
