Iranian Women's Football Team Returns Amid Controversy and Asylum Decisions
Iranian Women's Team Makes Headlines at AFC Women's Asian Cup
In the backdrop of the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the USA/Israel, the Iranian women's football team has captured significant attention. They traveled to Australia to participate in the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026. During one of the matches, the players chose to remain silent during the national anthem as a form of protest against the Islamic regime, although they did not issue an official statement. Notably, seven members of the team, including two support staff, sought asylum in Australia, which was granted. This decision drew criticism from various Iranian government officials. Nevertheless, their return to Iran was celebrated with much enthusiasm.
Despite their asylum requests, several players returned to Iran on March 19, greeted by a jubilant crowd in Tehran. Supporters waved flags, and some players were seen holding bouquets of flowers and signing mini footballs. Midfielder Fatemeh Shaban expressed her joy, stating, “First of all we are so happy to be in Iran, because Iran is our homeland. I wasn’t expecting this many people to come to welcome us, and I am happy to be the daughter of Iran.”
Asylum Seekers Remain in Australia
While the majority of the team returned home, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh opted to stay in Australia after receiving asylum. They are currently training with the Brisbane Roar football club. Interestingly, five out of the seven players who initially sought asylum later decided to return to Iran, despite having Australian visas, citing concerns for their safety upon returning home.
Iran's first Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, previously dismissed claims that the women would face danger if they returned, asserting that Iran “welcomes its children with open arms and the government guarantees their security.” The Iranian team, however, had a disappointing run in the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026, finishing last in their group after losing all matches against Australia, South Korea, and the Philippines.
