Thrilling World Cup Match Ends in Stalemate

Los Angeles [US], June 16: In an intense World Cup opener, Iran managed to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday, amidst protests from Iranian fans against the Tehran government at SoFi Stadium.

The match kicked off with New Zealand taking an early lead in the seventh minute, as Elijah Just found the net with a close-range volley, assisted by captain Chris Wood.

Iran equalized in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian scored from close range, igniting celebrations among the predominantly pro-Iran crowd in the packed stadium.

New Zealand regained the lead in the 54th minute, with Just scoring his second goal of the match, expertly lifting the ball over goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand after another assist from Wood.

However, Iran responded ten minutes later, with Mohammad Mohebbi heading the ball in off the back post to level the score once more.

Looking ahead, Iran will return to Los Angeles to face Belgium, while New Zealand is set to play against Egypt in Vancouver for their next Group G matches on Sunday. Earlier, Belgium and Egypt played to a 1-1 draw.

This marks New Zealand's third appearance at the World Cup, yet they remain winless after seven matches. Iran, on the other hand, is aiming to advance to the knockout stage for the first time.

In a show of defiance, Iranian supporters displayed the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag inside SoFi Stadium, despite FIFA's ban on such symbols.

Prior to the match, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the stadium to voice their opposition to the Iranian government.

Ramin Rezaeian was awarded Player of the Match for his performance against New Zealand.
