IPL's Historic Billion-Dollar Franchise Sales: RCB and RR Lead the Charge

IPL's Rise to Prominence

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has garnered international attention as it approaches its 19th season, positioning itself among the elite sports leagues globally, trailing only the NFL and NBA. The recent sales of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for approximately $1.78 billion (around ₹16,738 crores) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for about $1.63 billion (approximately ₹15,280 crores) have sent ripples through the sports community, marking the IPL as the first cricket league to reach billion-dollar valuations. Both franchises have made history by being the first teams in the league to surpass the billion-dollar mark, with their combined sale value totaling around $3.4 billion (nearly ₹31,000 crores). These ownership changes are set to take effect after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season.

BCCI's Financial Gain from Franchise Sales

RCB and RR Sold for ₹31,000 Crore Approx, But BCCI's Tiny Clause Stole The Show

Reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will receive ₹1,583 crore as transfer fees, which is 5% of the sale proceeds from both franchises. This clause, part of the agreement between the franchises and the BCCI, activates upon any ownership change of the ten IPL teams. This ensures that the BCCI benefits financially from every ownership transition, backed by necessary approvals from the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council.

While it remains uncertain if the sale of the Royals includes any sister franchises, it is confirmed that the RCB sale encompasses both the Men's and Women's teams. The final amount the BCCI will receive is still speculative, but it is expected to be close to the aforementioned estimate.
