Virat Kohli's Unstoppable Century Leads RCB to Victory Over KKR
Kohli's Remarkable Comeback
Virat Kohli overcame the stress of two consecutive scoreless outings by scoring an unbeaten century, revealing that he felt anxious stepping onto the field. His performance helped the Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure a six-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders, propelling them to the top of the IPL standings on Wednesday.
With this achievement, Kohli notched his record-extending ninth IPL century, surpassing both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to become the player with the most appearances in the tournament's history, totaling 279 matches. This marked his first century in the IPL since the 2024 season.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, Kohli shared, "The fact that I didn’t score in the last two matches really affected me, as I know I can perform well and have been hitting the ball nicely." He expressed his relief at being named Player of the Match.
He continued, "When you don’t contribute significantly, it weighs on you because my goal has always been to improve and be the best version of myself for the team." Kohli acknowledged that the pressure he felt after his previous failures ultimately motivated him to bounce back.
Regarding his celebration after reaching the century, he stated, "It wasn’t a grand celebration because we understand the significance of the points. I consciously aim to contribute more to the team."
Kohli emphasized the value of pressure, saying, "People often say pressure is a privilege; it keeps you grounded. Positive pressure can enhance your performance. Experiencing a couple of tough games can induce nervousness, which can be beneficial."
He noted that while it requires effort, such experiences can elevate one's game. Kohli mentioned that these setbacks are crucial as they push players to return to their best form.
He focused on maintaining his natural style, avoiding extravagant shots, and consistently finding gaps. "I concentrated on my stance at the crease, sticking to my game plan, selecting the right lengths, and hitting the gaps I could. I’m pleased I could trust my abilities," he remarked.
On extending his IPL century record, Kohli expressed his desire to keep challenging himself at the highest level. "I have a passion for batting; it’s my core feeling. Competing at this level against the best is an honor. I pour my heart and soul into it because it won’t last forever," he stated.
Kohli added, "I want to seize every moment and embrace pressure situations, where I feel the heat and challenge myself to excel." He reflected on the life lessons sports impart, stating, "Performing under pressure builds character. Even after all these years, my love for the game remains. I cherish hitting the ball perfectly, and I’m grateful for it all."
RCB captain Rajat Patidar expressed his satisfaction with the team's ascent to the top of the table, now holding 16 points and overtaking Gujarat Titans. "It feels fantastic. Everyone has stepped up at different times during the tournament. We’re taking it one game at a time," Patidar said.
He added, "I’m very pleased with the win. The way we controlled their innings after 10 overs to limit them to 192 is a positive sign for us."
