In a thrilling finale on Sunday, Virat Kohli's exceptional unbeaten innings propelled the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a five-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2026 championship, earning accolades from his childhood mentor, Rajkumar Sharma.

Sharma emphasized Kohli's remarkable ability to perform under pressure, noting that the seasoned batsman expertly times his aggression, steering the team through crucial moments during a chase.

Kohli's unbeaten half-century was pivotal in RCB's thrilling five-wicket win over GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium, marking the defending champions' second IPL title.

After being put to bat first by Patidar, GT managed a modest total of 155/8 in their 20 overs. Only Washington Sundar (50* off 37 balls) and Nishant Sindhu (20 off 18 balls) managed to score above 20 runs. RCB's bowlers, including Rasikh Dar Salam (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29), and Josh Hazlewood (2/37), consistently applied pressure, with Krunal Pandya also taking a crucial wicket.

In pursuit of 156 runs, RCB started strong with a 62-run opening partnership between Venkatesh Iyer (32 off 16 balls) and Kohli. Although GT fought back, reducing RCB to 132/5, Kohli's masterful unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, featuring nine fours and three sixes, guided the team to victory with two overs remaining.

RCB's aggressive chase began with Iyer hitting Kagiso Rabada for three fours and a six in the second over. Kohli quickly joined in, striking Rabada for three fours and a six in the next over. RCB reached 50 runs in just 3.4 overs before losing Iyer to Siraj, followed by Devdutt Padikkal, leaving RCB at 63/2.

Despite Rashid Khan dismissing Patidar (15) and Krunal Pandya (1) in the ninth over, Kohli anchored the innings, reaching his IPL playoff half-century in just 25 balls, the fastest of his career, with seven fours and two sixes. Partnerships with Tim David and Jitesh Sharma helped RCB seal the win in 18 overs.

RCB's bowlers played a crucial role in limiting GT to a subpar total. Shubman Gill fell early to Hazlewood for 10, followed by Sai Sudharsan (12). By the end of the power play, GT was at 45/2. Tight spin bowling and disciplined seam spells kept the Titans under pressure, with contributions from Rasikh Dar Salam and Krunal Pandya. Despite a resilient 50 from Sundar, GT could only manage 155/8.

Rasikh Dar Salam (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29), and Hazlewood (2/37) led the bowling attack, ensuring RCB maintained control throughout the match.

With this victory, RCB secured their second IPL trophy and their fourth overall title in Indian franchise cricket, which includes two Women's Premier League (WPL) championships.
