Virat Kohli's Century Leads RCB to Victory Over KKR in IPL 2026
Kohli Shines Under Pressure
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 14: Virat Kohli emphasized the value of pressure in enhancing performance, stating, "pressure is a privilege," after he scored an impressive unbeaten 105, steering Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a six-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2026 clash on Wednesday.
Having faced a challenging run with no fifties in his previous four IPL matches and two consecutive ducks leading up to this game, Kohli's 105* off 60 balls, which included 11 boundaries and three sixes, was pivotal in RCB's successful chase of 193 runs in Raipur.
Upon reaching his century in the second last over, Kohli celebrated modestly, simply raising his bat to acknowledge the cheers from the audience and his teammates.
After being named Player of the Match, Kohli explained his subdued celebration by highlighting the significance of securing points, reiterating that "pressure is a privilege" and that it motivates him to elevate his game. He shared that he concentrated on maintaining composure, playing conservatively, identifying gaps, and remaining present, especially after feeling anxious at the start.
Kohli expressed his appreciation for consistency, relishing the opportunity to bat deeply, and viewing participation at this level as a privilege that aids in character development and continuous improvement.
"The celebration wasn’t extravagant because we understand the importance of points. There’s a reason people say pressure is a privilege. Positive pressure enhances your game, pushing you to improve. I was initially nervous, just wanting to get off the mark. I focused on my stance at the crease, avoiding risky shots, finding gaps, and staying in the moment, which allowed me to play risk-free cricket," the former RCB captain remarked during the post-match presentation.
"All these aspects were gratifying for me. I simply love batting. It’s an honor to compete at this level. This has been my life’s work, and I aim to maximize every opportunity. It builds your character," Kohli added.
In pursuit of 193 runs, RCB bounced back strongly after losing an early wicket, with Kohli anchoring the innings and Devdutt Padikkal contributing 39 runs. Kohli achieved his ninth IPL century in the 19th over, leading RCB to victory with five balls remaining. Kartik Tyagi was the standout bowler for KKR, finishing with figures of 3/32.
Earlier, KKR set a target of 192/4, thanks to solid performances from Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who scored a half-century, and Cameron Green. RCB bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, and Rasikh Salam Dar each took a wicket.
This win propelled RCB to the top of the IPL 2026 points table, accumulating 16 points from 12 matches. They have two league matches remaining, with their next game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala.
Following the victory, RCB captain Rajat Patidar expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, acknowledging contributions from various players and emphasizing a focus on one match at a time. He praised the bowling effort, particularly how RCB managed to restrict KKR after the first ten overs despite a strong start.
Patidar lauded Kohli's performance, stating there are no words to describe it, while also noting the team's good form and their intention to maintain momentum in the upcoming matches, including the one in Dharamsala. He mentioned that Phil Salt, who has been sidelined for the last six games due to injury, is expected to return soon.
"It feels fantastic. Everyone contributed at different stages of the tournament. We are taking it one game at a time. (Reflecting on the first innings) I am very satisfied. The way we controlled their innings after ten overs to restrict them to 192 is a positive sign for us. (On Kohli) I can’t find the words, but he consistently achieves great things," Patidar stated during the post-match presentation.
"We have been playing well. With two more league games ahead, we will focus on one match at a time. We are heading to Dharamsala, which is a good batting track, and we will aim for a win. (Regarding Salt’s potential return) I’m not sure, but he should be back soon," he concluded.
