Vaibhav Suryavanshi Shines in IPL Opener as Rajasthan Royals Defeat Chennai Super Kings
Rajasthan Royals Triumph Over Chennai Super Kings
Guwahati (Assam) [India], March 30: After the Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a victory against the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL opener, young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi shared insights about his partnership with opening teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal and his recent birthday festivities as he turned 15.
Suryavanshi delivered an impressive performance, achieving the second-fastest fifty in RR's IPL history, which propelled the team to an emphatic eight-wicket win over CSK. Chasing a target of 128 runs, his explosive 15-ball half-century and a swift 75-run partnership with Jaiswal effectively sealed the match for RR. The 15-year-old continues to excel across various formats, including IPL, U19 cricket, and state-level competitions for Bihar.
Celebrating his birthday on March 27, Suryavanshi mentioned during the post-match presentation that he kept his celebrations low-key, opting for an early night to avoid the traditional cake-smearing.
"I didn't do much for my birthday – there was supposed to be a cake-cutting, but I went to bed early to dodge the cake-smearing," Suryavanshi explained.
He elaborated on his strategy, stating that the focus was on capitalizing during the powerplay, noting that as the ball aged, it became easier to hit.
Discussing his aggressive approach and synergy with Jaiswal, Suryavanshi remarked, "The coaches didn’t specifically mention that bowlers would target me, but they encouraged me to play my natural game and adapt to the situation. My opening partner (Jaiswal) communicates with me after every ball, advising when to take singles and motivating me to play my shots when the ball is coming well on the bat."
Nandre Burger, the 'Player of the Match' who took 2 wickets for 26 runs, commented on a remarkable delivery that dismissed former teammate Sanju Samson for just six runs. "I can’t say I intended to bowl that exact delivery to Sanju, it just happened – you could call it natural variation. The goal was to maintain tight lines and force batters to hit into our desired areas, so I’m pleased it worked out today," he stated.
Burger, who was part of the RR setup in 2024 when Samson was captain, noted the presence of new faces and changes in coaching staff, but emphasized that the team's morale is high, with everyone smiling.
Captain Riyan Parag expressed his relief at winning the toss, acknowledging that the pitch's moisture would challenge the batters. "Everyone executed their plans well. A lot of preparation went into this. Our aim this year is to win the trophy. We want to play smart cricket. I tell Vaibhav he will play all 14 games, and he’s already making an impact. I’m thrilled to have him on my team. With Dhruv (Jurel) at three and Hettie (Shimron Hetmyer) at five, I hope we can secure victories with this batting lineup," he concluded.
RR chose to bowl first, with Archer (2/19), Burger (2/26), and Jadeja (2/18) making it difficult for CSK, who found themselves at 57/6 at one point. Contributions from Jamie Overton (43 off 36 balls, including two fours and two sixes), Kartik Sharma (18), and Sarfaraz Khan (17) helped CSK reach a total of 127 runs in 19.4 overs before losing all their batters. Suryavanshi's explosive 52 off 17 balls, featuring four boundaries and five sixes, alongside Jaiswal's unbeaten 38 off 36 balls, laid the foundation for a comfortable victory with a rapid 75-run partnership.
