Historic Performance by Vaibhav Suryavanshi
In a remarkable display of talent, Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi made headlines during a match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Guwahati, Assam, on April 7. He achieved a significant milestone by becoming the leading run-scorer in major T20 leagues before reaching the age of 18, showcasing his extraordinary six-hitting ability.
Suryavanshi delivered an explosive performance, scoring 39 runs off just 14 balls, which included one four and five sixes, achieving a striking rate of 278.57 before being dismissed by Shardul Thakur.
With a total of 374 runs in his IPL career thus far, Suryavanshi holds the record for the most runs in major T20 leagues globally before turning 18, according to CricViz. His impressive stats include an average of 37.40 over 10 innings, a strike rate of 218.41, and notable achievements of one century, two fifties, and 35 sixes.
His remarkable ability to hit sixes is highlighted by the fact that he has achieved a six every 4.9 balls faced in the IPL, the best record among players who have faced at least 20 balls, surpassing renowned players like Romario Shepherd and Andre Russell.
In this match, Suryavanshi notably took on Jasprit Bumrah, hitting him for two sixes, including a memorable first ball faced against the Indian pace legend, which he sent soaring over wide long-on.
This season, Suryavanshi has accumulated 122 runs in three innings, averaging 40.66 with an impressive strike rate nearing 249, including a standout performance of 52 runs off just 17 balls against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
His opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, also had a stellar outing, scoring an unbeaten 77 runs off 32 balls, featuring 10 fours and four sixes. Jaiswal became the fourth player from RR to reach a century of IPL sixes, joining the ranks of Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Shane Watson.
Jaiswal is now tied for the second-most fifty-plus scores for RR, with 19 such scores, including two centuries. He shares this record with Ajinkya Rahane, while Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson lead with 25 each.
Against MI, Jaiswal has an impressive record, amassing 373 runs in nine innings at an average of 53.28, including a century and two fifties. His recent performances against MI include scores of 77*, 13, 104*, 10, and 124.
In the match, MI chose to bowl first in a rain-shortened 11-over game. Contributions from Suryavanshi (39 runs), Jaiswal (77* runs), and a quick 20 runs from skipper Riyan Parag helped RR post a total of 150/3 in their allotted overs.
AM Ghazanfar was the standout bowler for MI, taking 2 wickets for 21 runs, while Bumrah had an unusually challenging day.
