Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shatters IPL Records with Stellar Performance
Sooryavanshi's Record-Breaking Innings
In Mullanpur, Punjab, on May 17, Rajasthan Royals' 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has made headlines by surpassing West Indies great Andre Russell for the highest runs in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
During the eliminator match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sooryavanshi delivered an explosive performance, scoring 97 runs off just 29 balls, which included five fours and an impressive 12 sixes, achieving a strike rate exceeding 334.
This season, he has accumulated a remarkable total of 680 runs across 15 innings, averaging 45.33 with a strike rate of 242.85. His record includes a century and four half-centuries, with a personal best of 103 runs. He has hit 55 fours and 65 sixes from 280 balls faced, boasting a boundary every 2.3 balls and a six every 4.3 balls.
Sooryavanshi has scored an astounding 88.9% of his runs through boundaries, compared to Russell's 85.5% from 510 runs, according to CricViz.
He has also matched Chris Gayle's record for the most instances of hitting 10 or more sixes in an IPL innings, achieving this feat four times, with three of those instances occurring this season, making him the first player to hit 10 or more sixes in three separate IPL innings within a single season.
Continuing his impressive streak, Sooryavanshi surpassed Sri Lankan icon Sanath Jayasuriya's record of seven powerplay sixes, hitting eight during the IPL 2008 match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
He now holds the record for the most runs scored in the powerplay during an IPL season, totaling 490 runs, surpassing Australian star David Warner's 467 runs for SRH in 2016.
This marks his fifth fifty-plus score in the powerplay, with only Warner ahead of him with six such scores.
Sooryavanshi has joined the ranks of Suresh Raina and Adam Gilchrist for fifty-plus scores made during powerplay in IPL knockout matches.
His fifth fifty in under 20 balls ties him with Abhishek Sharma for the second-fastest fifty in IPL knockout matches.
With 12 sixes in a single innings, he has set a new record for the most sixes hit by a batter in IPL knockouts, surpassing Shubman Gill's 10 sixes against Mumbai Indians in 2023. He also holds the record for the most sixes in an IPL inning by an Indian.
Sooryavanshi's 97 runs represent the second-highest individual score for Rajasthan Royals in IPL knockout matches, trailing only Jos Buttler's 106* against RCB in the IPL 2022 qualifier.
He has now set the record for the most runs scored by an uncapped player in an IPL season, overtaking his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal's 625 runs from the 2023 season. Additionally, he is the youngest player to reach 600 runs in an IPL season.
Before Sooryavanshi's emergence, no player in T20 history had scored over 600 runs in a tournament while maintaining a strike rate above 200.
Batting first, Rajasthan Royals posted a total of 242/8 in 20 overs, with Sooryavanshi's explosive 97 and Dhruv Jurel's 50 off 21 balls being pivotal contributions. Praful Hinge was the standout bowler for SRH, taking 3 wickets for 54 runs.
